How to Make a Custom Fidget Clicker From Any Picture

Models and miniatures
Published Updated About 6 min read

Fidget clickers are having a moment. One clicker crowdfunding campaign on MakerWorld raised over $129,000, and clicker models are all over Bambu Lab's community feeds. The formula is irresistible: a chunky multi-color print, a real mechanical keyboard switch inside, and that deeply satisfying click. This guide shows how to make your own from any picture with the Printara Fidget Clicker Maker, what switch to buy, and how to print it.

What is a 3D printed fidget clicker?

A fidget clicker is a two-part print: a base and a button carrying your artwork as flat, multi-color layers. Between them sits a genuine Cherry MX-style mechanical switch, the same part used in mechanical keyboards. The switch snaps into the base like it snaps into a keyboard plate, the button press-fits onto the switch stem, and every press gives you a crisp mechanical click with a spring return. No glue, no supports, no electronics.

The clicky feel is real, not printed: it comes from the switch's internal click mechanism. That is why these little toys feel like a product, not a print.

From picture to clicker in four steps

  1. Upload and crop an image. A logo, a drawing, your dog, your kid's doodle. PNG, JPG or WebP; crop to the part you want right in the browser.
  2. Trace it. The maker traces logos, lettering and drawings into flat color areas. Tracing is free. For photos there is an optional AI redraw that turns the picture into bold sticker-style art first; it costs 10 credits and may change details, so check the result.
  3. Pick colors and adjust parts. Click any color to swap it for a filament you own, then select a single color part to scale it or shift it. A live 3D preview rebuilds as you go, and clicking it plays the click.
  4. Make it and download. Add a keychain hole if you want one, click Make clicker (free), and download a multi-color 3MF for Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer plus plain STLs. The switch socket uses classic MX dimensions; print the base once to test the fit before a full batch, because every printer is a little different.

Want raised depth instead of flat layers? The 3D mode sculpts your picture into a relief button, removes the background, and builds the MX socket and pedestal for you. It takes a minute or three and costs 30 credits per build; size, depth, colors and downloads are free after that.

The switch: what to buy (and what to avoid)

You need one MX-style clicky switch per clicker. The blue family is the clicky one:

Both 3-pin and 5-pin versions fit, because the base leaves an open recess under the switch for its pins. The socket is designed around classic Cherry MX dimensions; low-profile and box-style switches have not been tested.

Printing on Bambu Lab, Prusa and single-color printers

The 3MF download carries color data for both slicer families in one file: Bambu Studio reads the embedded filament palette and slot assignments (choose "load project settings" when opening), and PrusaSlicer picks up the extruder mapping for MMU setups. On a single-color printer, print the base and the button STLs separately and swap filament at a layer pause for a two-tone effect. How it compares to other clicker makers

Crowdfunded clicker kits proved the category, and their mechanical designs are excellent. Printara follows the same MX-switch idea. The differences are in how you get from an idea to a print:

Make your first clicker

Making a flat clicker is free with a free Printara account: tracing, colors, part edits, the 3D preview and the downloads cost nothing. Only the optional AI redraw (10 credits) and the 3D relief mode (30 credits per build) use credits. Grab a pack of blue switches, pick a picture, and make something that will annoy everyone in the room, in the best way.

FAQ

What switch do I need?

Any Cherry MX-style clicky switch. Classic blue-family switches such as Outemu Blue or Gateron Blue give the loud, satisfying click and cost a few cents each. Avoid red (linear) and brown (tactile) switches, because they do not click. Both 3-pin and 5-pin versions fit.

Does it work with the Bambu Lab AMS?

Yes. The download is a 3MF with the filament colors and slot assignments embedded, so Bambu Studio opens it with colors assigned. PrusaSlicer reads the same file for MMU setups, and a single-color printer can print the parts from the included STLs.

Can I use a photo, or does it have to be a logo?

Any image works. Tracing suits logos, drawings and lettering. For photos, the optional AI redraw (10 credits) turns the picture into bold sticker-style art that prints well as flat color layers, or the 3D relief mode (30 credits per build) sculpts the photo into raised depth.

How much does it cost to make a clicker?

Making a flat clicker is free with a free Printara account: tracing, colors, part edits, the 3D preview and the downloads cost nothing. Only the optional AI redraw (10 credits) and the 3D relief mode (30 credits per build) use credits.

Do I need supports or glue?

No glue and no supports. Both parts print flat. The switch snaps into the base like into a keyboard plate, and the button press-fits onto the switch stem with a standard MX cross socket. Print a test first, because printers differ.

Can I sell prints of my clickers?

Designs you make from your own images are yours. Do not use third-party logos or characters unless you have permission; see our guide to selling on Etsy.
