Render of the digital sculpt, not a photograph of a printed or painted product. Confirm the selected version's contents and availability.

The same character can appear in listings with almost identical pictures. One is a digital file. Another adds supports to that file. A third is a box of printed parts, while a fourth is a painted display piece.

The difference is what you receive and what you still need to do. Decide whether you want a printing project, a building and painting project, or a finished collectible.

Compare the deliverable first

These are useful categories, not a promise that every seller includes the same extras. Read the specific listing alongside the comparison.

VersionWhat it meansWhat to confirm
Unsupported STLDigital model geometry without prepared supportsPreparation, slicing, printing and finishing
Presupported STLDigital geometry with supports addedSuitability for your setup and whether unsupported files are included
Printed resin kitPhysical printed partsWhich cleaning, curing, support removal, assembly and painting remain
Painted statueA physical piece with a specified finishColour scheme, assembly on arrival and included accessories

A digital file does not include a physical print. A physical kit does not automatically include digital files. If you want both, ask whether they belong to the same purchase.

Digital files still need a printing workflow

An STL stores the shape as surface triangles, not a complete printer setup. Project formats can retain more information, including slicer settings. The Prusa guide to saved projects explains this distinction.

For an unsupported model, check for separate parts and an assembly guide. For a presupported version, ask what size the supports were prepared for, what conditions were tested and whether the unsupported geometry is included. Supports are not a guarantee of success on every printer or at another size.

Keep the supplied originals and review the files in your own workflow. Our miniature-readiness guide covers dimensions, thin details and geometry. Without your own printer, check the licence and ask a printing service about accepting the files before sharing them.

Printed kits: where does the maker's work stop?

A kit may suit you if you enjoy building and painting but do not want to print the model. "Printed" alone does not explain its condition on arrival.

Ask whether parts arrive cleaned and cured, whether supports have been removed, and what surface preparation remains. Check whether instructions, glue, tools and paint are included or must be obtained separately. Request handling and assembly instructions for that kit.

Look for a parts list. A base, alternate head or accessory shown in a scene may not belong to every version. Ask how small parts are identified and what to do if something is missing or damaged.

Painted pieces: agree on the result

Check whether the pictured colour scheme is supplied, whether custom colours are an option, and whether the piece arrives assembled or needs final assembly after shipping.

Distinguish a render from a photograph. A render can explain a sculpt or proposed colours, but it is not a photograph of a manufactured piece. Ask for relevant physical examples to judge the finish, and confirm whether an example shows a previous piece or the one being supplied.

Do not assume a decorative collectible is suitable as a toy. Check its intended use and handling information.

Measure the complete display piece

Compare overall height, width and depth with your display space. Confirm whether height includes the base and highest accessory. Ask for the base footprint: a piece may fit vertically but extend beyond a shelf.

Distinguish assembled dimensions from individual kit parts. For a digital file, identify the intended printed size. A scale label or close-up image should not be your only measurement.

Check the licence and delivery separately

Read the actual licence for personal prints, gifts, commercial printing, resale and sharing with a printing service. Do not infer permission from the ability to download or modify a file. Ask the seller about anything your intended use depends on.

Confirm current availability and delivery arrangements for the version you want. A download, a made-to-order print and an already-finished piece have different fulfilment steps. A listing or order button does not tell you a delivery date.
