Multi-Color 3D Printing in 2026: Any Model to AMS-Ready 3MF in One Click

Files and slicing
Published Updated About 5 min read

Multi-color 3D printing used to mean one of two things: hours of hand-painting triangles in Bambu Studio, or printing in one color and breaking out the acrylics. With the Printara Color Engine, Printara's multi-color 3MF engine, there is a third option: click one button and download a 3MF file that prints in full color on any Bambu Lab printer with an AMS. Free, in your browser, on any textured model.

This parrot was printed straight from a Printara multi-color 3MF. No slicer painting, no post-paint. Four filaments, one click.

Why 3MF beats STL for color printing

STL is a 30-year-old format that stores geometry and nothing else. It has no idea what color your model should be. 3MF, the format modern slicers use natively, stores per-triangle color assignments. When you open a multi-color 3MF, the slicer already knows which filament slot prints the beak, which prints the wing feathers and which prints the branch.

That makes 3MF the only sane way to feed a multi-material printer like the Bambu Lab AMS. The problem was never the format. The problem was getting the colors INTO the file. Until now that meant manually painting the mesh in the slicer with a mouse, triangle by triangle, which is somewhere between tedious and impossible for organic shapes like animals, busts and figurines.

How the Printara Color Engine works

The Printara Color Engine runs entirely in your browser. When you click Generate Multi-Color in the studio, it:

  1. Reads your model's texture and builds an optimal filament palette (up to 16 colors), snapped to real PLA filament colors you can actually buy.
  2. Votes per triangle. Every triangle samples its texture region at multiple points and votes on the closest filament color. Voting instead of averaging keeps edges crisp, so feather lines stay feather lines.
  3. Smooths the boundaries. Neighbouring triangles negotiate so you do not get salt-and-pepper noise, and color borders get a refinement pass with extra samples.
  4. Exports a Bambu-ready 3MF with the filament palette embedded. Open it in Bambu Studio, map the slots to your AMS and press print.

A two-million-triangle statue converts in about 20 seconds. There is no upload to a render farm and no credit cost, because the work happens on your machine.

Fine-tune with the paint brush

Automatic mapping gets you 95% of the way. For the last 5% the studio has a built-in paint mode that works like the mesh painting in Bambu Studio, but faster: left mouse paints the armed filament color, right drag rotates, Ctrl+Z undoes stroke by stroke. You see exactly what the printed result will look like, then export.

You can also swap any filament slot for a different color at any time. The preview updates live, so trying a red dragon against a green dragon costs nothing.

From idea to color print in 3 steps

  1. Generate or upload a model. Type a prompt or drop a photo in Printara Studio, which uses credits, or open a textured model you already have.
  2. Click Generate Multi-Color. Pick how many filament colors you want (your AMS has 4 slots per unit; the engine supports up to 16) and a detail level.
  3. Download the 3MF. Open it in Bambu Studio, assign the slots to your loaded filaments and print.

Selling models? 3MF Ready is your new best badge

If you sell STL files on the Printara marketplace, Etsy or CGTrader, multi-color is the strongest differentiator of 2026. Most sellers ship plain one-color STLs. When your listing says Multi-Color AMS Ready, every Bambu owner in the audience knows they get a full-color print with zero work.

Printara automates this end to end: generate the multi-color 3MF once, and the model gets a 3MF Ready badge on its marketplace page. Buyers automatically receive the 3MF alongside the STL and GLB. The AI listing generator even writes "Multi-Color AMS Ready" into your Etsy title and tags for you.

FAQ

Does this work with printers other than Bambu Lab?

Yes. Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer read the color data natively, and PrusaSlicer 2.8 or newer imports the painting too - just assign your MMU filaments and print. Between them that covers Bambu AMS, Prusa MMU, Voron, Creality and most other multi-material setups.

What if my model has no texture?

The color engine needs a textured model to know where colors go. Models generated in Printara Studio with textures on come textured. For a plain mesh, add a texture first with the Texture tool, which uses credits, then run multi-color.

How many colors should I use?

Four is the sweet spot for a single AMS unit. The engine supports up to 16 (four AMS units chained). More colors means more filament swaps and longer print times, so for most figurines 4 to 8 colors give the best result-to-time ratio.

How much does it cost?

The on-device Printara Color Engine is free: generating the colors, the paint mode and the 3MF download cost nothing. An optional server export for models the on-device engine cannot process, such as several parts or materials, costs 30 credits. Generating a textured model in Studio also uses credits.
