Design a 3D printed photo keychain

Start with a photo, a drawing, a logo or a name. The ornament maker turns it into a small flat design, lets you set the keychain size and place a hanging loop, then exports a multi-color 3MF or a single-color STL.

The editor needs a Printara account, no card required. Flat designs and exports use no credits. See what costs credits.

Three ways to start a keychain

From a photo

Photo mosaic turns a photo into a few filament colors and is instant. 3D Ornament sculpts it into a small relief for 30 credits. Crop tightly to the face or the pet: at keychain size there is little room for background.

From a drawing or logo

Color layers keeps the flat colors of artwork as separate parts. Trace image makes a single-color silhouette for STL. Clear outlines and three or four colors read best at small sizes.

From a name

Type the name with Text and add a shape behind it. Bold letters survive better than thin script at keychain size.

Renders of files exported from the editor and listed on the Printara marketplace as magnets. They show the kind of flat multi-color design that works at keychain size once a loop is added.

From artwork to a keychain

  1. Choose a readable image. Trace image suits a clear silhouette. Color layers suits flat artwork; photo mosaic or a 3D relief suits photographs.
  2. Size the model. Many keychains are 40 to 60 mm across. Check small details at that size, not zoomed in.
  3. Add the hanging loop. Position it so it overlaps the body and check the opening against your own keyring.
  4. Check the colors and merge regions you do not need, so the count matches your filaments.
  5. Export a multi-color 3MF or an STL and inspect it in your slicer.
  6. Print one sample and test the loop before printing a batch.

Choose the output for your keychain

Single-color geometry

STL contains the solid shape without color assignments. Your slicer controls orientation, layer height, supports and material settings. Paint by hand if you want color.

Color-separated model

3MF carries colored parts and filament assignments. Confirm that your slicer imports them correctly and map the colors to the filaments you actually have.

The hanging loop is an editable feature, not a strength or hardware-fit guarantee. A disconnected loop remains a separate piece; confirm the join and test it with your keyring.

What it costs

A flat keychain costs nothing to design or download: you only need a Printara account, and new accounts start with 0 credits. Two optional steps are paid, and each shows its price on the button. Credit packs and plans are on the pricing page.

Keychain printing tips

Thickness

A keychain that goes into a pocket takes knocks. A body of around 3 to 5 mm is a common starting point; keep plenty of solid material around the loop.

Orientation

Print flat on the bed so the layers run along the loop, not across it. A loop printed standing up is weaker at the layer lines.

Photo keychain FAQ

Can I use a photograph?

Yes. Choose a method that suits the image: color layers for simple artwork, photo mosaic for reduced-color detail, or 3D Ornament for a relief. A small keychain may need simpler features to stay readable.

Is the loop added automatically?

Enable the hanging loop and position it in the editor. Check that it joins the body and that its opening fits your keyring. No particular ring size or load capacity is guaranteed.

Will the colors transfer to my printer?

STL has no color data. A 3MF carries colored parts, but the filament mapping depends on the receiving slicer and printer. Inspect the imported model and the sliced layers before printing.

Does it cost anything?

You need a Printara account, which costs nothing and needs no card. Designing a flat keychain and exporting 3MF or STL use no credits. Optional AI steps use credits: 10 for a generated motif or an AI clean-up of your image, 30 for a 3D relief from a photo.

Can I try it without an account?

Not yet. The editor runs in Printara Studio, which needs a Printara account. Signing up is free and new accounts can design and export flat keychains without credits.

Can I order a finished keychain here?

This workflow prepares design files. Opening the editor does not order physical production or shipping.
